SEDGWICK’S Matt Dwyer is contemplating following in the footsteps of Mark Taylor when the Rams continue their Emu Valley Cricket Association game against West Bendigo on Saturday.
Back in 1998 Australian captain Mark Taylor equaled Don Bradman’s then Australian Test record score of 334 against Pakistan and then declared.
On Saturday Dwyer is set to resume his innings unbeaten on 233 – the record score for a Sedgwick player, which was set just six days earlier by team-mate and captain Rick Ladson.
However, Dwyer is contemplating retiring so as to share the Rams’ record with Ladson, which he had the chance to surpass last week, but chose instead to defend the last few balls he faced as the Rams went to stumps at 2-437 off just 45 overs in reply to the Redbacks’ 54 at Club Court.
“I like the fact that Rick and I are both on 233,” Dwyer said this week.
While Dwyer likes the idea of finishing on 233 alongside fellow left-hander Ladson’s score, there’s also the chance beckoning to have a crack at the EVCA’s record score.
That is held by Marong’s Scott Ross, who made 283 n.o. against Spring Gully on November 24, 2012.
Ladson – who is unbeaten on 92 – wants Dwyer to bat on and have a crack at mowing down Ross’ record score.
“I’ve clearly stated to him that it’s his choice. Matty and I have great respect for each other and hopefully, he strikes them well again and keeps going towards Scott’s record score,” Ladson said.
Dwyer’s 233 n.o. against his former club already features 28 boundaries and 16 sixes – one of which came off the third ball he faced.

“Everyone is going to have their day at some stage and it’s just worked out that Rick and I have had our days a week apart,” Dwyer said.
Dwyer’s 233 n.o. came six days after Ladson cracked an unbeaten 233 in the Rams’ score of 6-424 against Marong, also at Club Court, in what was a knock that went viral on social media.
With Ladson unbeaten on 92 heading into Saturday, his average for the season is 192, having made 384 runs in total and only going out twice.
Having ended day one with a lead of 483, Ladson says he chose to cash in on the chance for the Rams to boost their bonus points with the bat, rather than sending the Redbacks in again and trying to complete a day one outright win.
“At the start of our innings the plan was to assess where we were at the last drinks break, but when you think about how important every little bonus point can be, I just felt it was important with Matty hitting it so well that we try to make the most of the bonus points,” Ladson said.
“You just never know how handy they are going to be later in the season.”
Meanwhile, on Saturday night the Rams will be holding their third annual Sedgwick Legends v Sponsors 10-over cricket match at Club Court.
The two sides will play for the Paul Jones Memorial Shield from 7pm.
Jones, who passed away after a battle with cancer, was a past player and fine clubman with the Rams.
