A BENDIGO martial arts trainer has welcomed a decision to grant the sport of Muay Thai provisonal Olympic recognition.

It means the sport will be able to tap into some International Olympic Committee funding and apply to become part of the Olympic Games program in three years time.
Phil Chapman, who runs the Underdog Gym in Bendigo and a former state karate champion, said the move would help further the popularity of the sport.
"It would be great to get the sport into the Olympics, there's no doubt about that," he said.
"It's exciting to watch and it's definitely becoming more popular."
The sport of cheerleading has also been granted provisional status.
