But for many who are already financially stressed the pressure to buy gifts for their children and food for their families can be the last straw. 

That’s why, every year, the Allies Motorcycle Club ride through the streets of Bendigo collecting toys and cash – so that those in need can have one less thing to worry about. 

Today more than 100 burly bikers hit the road for their annual Bendigo Motorcycle Toy Run, with the donations going to the St Vincent de Paul to assist with their Christmas charity work. 

Club secretary and treasurer Bob Garritty said the ride raised about $4500 in cash as well as hundreds of toys. He said the money would be converted to food vouchers and handed out by St Vinnies. 

“That way people can buy hams and turkeys for Christmas lunch,” he said. 

The event organiser said his club had now raised almost $55,000 in cash and tens of thousands of dollars worth of kids toys and goods over the last 17 years.
