Social commentators Jane Caro and Van Badham will feature at an event showcasing Bendigo’s community sector.
The event, on November 24, will shine a spotlight on family and domestic violence.
It precedes White Ribbon Day and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, both on November 25.
The day following the Community Sector Showcase showcase is also the start of the United Nations’ 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
Caro will lead a panel of community leaders in a hypothetical scenario.
Often sighted on television programs such as The Gruen Transfer, The Project, The Drum, Sunrise and Q&A, Caro was an advertising writer for 30 years.
She is an author, novelist, columnist, journalist, feminist and broadcaster.
Badham - a feminist, critic, columnist, broadcaster, playwright and novelist - will deliver the keynote speech.
Her rebuttal to being called ‘hysterical’ by broadcaster Steve Price while discussing violence against women on the ABC television program Q&A in July went viral.
“It’s probably my ovaries making me do it, Steve,” Badham fired back.
The Community Sector Showcase is a first for the sector, and will run from 12.30pm until about 5pm at Ulumbarra Theatre.
Amicus and the Centre for Non-Violence will hold their annual general meetings during the event.
Haven; Home, Safe will host its annual stakeholder meeting.
There will be a careers expo for people interested in working in the sector, and an appeal for support from a new fund aimed at supporting projects promoting gender equity and preventing violence against women and children.
The Community Foundation for Central Victoria and Women’s Health Loddon Mallee are leading the Equity Prevents Violence initiative and have each contributed $6000 to the cause.
They are seeking a further $6000 from the community, which CFCV chief executive officer Ann Lansberry said would be used to support grassroots organisations working in the space.
“We’re delighted the Community Sector Showcase is talking about all the different ways in which so many organisations are looking at the prevention of violence against women,” Ms Lansberry said.
Registrations for the free event can be made online.
