MOST people tend to take their wallet with them every time they get in the car.
But what happens if you don’t? Do you need to carry your licence with you when driving?
If you are a fully qualified driver aged 26 or over, the answer is no.
Drivers do, however, need to be able to prove their identity if they are stopped by police, so it is recommended.
Police can also request drivers take their licence to a police station within seven days.
“If you’ve committed any offence, you need to be able to prove who you are,” Leading Senior Constable Pat Allan from Bendigo’s highway patrol unit said.
Probationary drivers and those aged under 26 must always have their licence with them when driving.
Learner drivers must also always carry their permit with them.
Leading Senior Constable Allan warned drivers that if they were unable to prove their identity, police could take them back to the police station.
In 2016-17, the fine for failing to produce identification is $155.
