BENDIGO Bank Spirit has climbed to the top of the WNBL ladder after an important road win against Townsville Fire.
The Spirit, led by star import Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe with 14 points and 10 rebounds, defeated the reigning champions 74-62 on Sunday.
It was the Spirit's third win in Townsville from as many matches since their 2014-15 grand final loss to the Fire.
The win boosted the Spirit's season record to 4-2.
A Dandenong win over Melbourne Boomers in Monday's Melbourne Cup eve blockbuster would allow the Rangers to regain top spot.
As was the case in their Friday night win against Dandenong, the Spirit's win was built on widespread contributions.
Point guard Kerryn Harrington continued her outstanding season to contribute 13 points, four rebounds and plenty of tough defence.
Kelsey Griffin added 12 points to go alongside her nine rebounds, while Ashleigh Karaitiana had her best game in Spirit colours to finish with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Townsville-born recruit Nadeen Payne's return home was a memorable one, with the forward contributing nine points and six rebounds in her role off the bench.
The Spirit led the reigning champions, who have slipped to 2-2 after consecutive defeats, by as much as 21.
Sixteen of their points came off Townsville turnovers, compared with nine for the Fire.
The Spirit, who host the University of Canberra Capitals in Bendigo this Saturday night, won the rebound count 53-33.
