Punters finished Bendigo Cup day on a high note when The Chairman was a stylish winner of the Aquafil Fresh Benchmark 70 Handicap (1600m).
The Mick Price-trained gelding travelled beautifully in the run just behind leaders Royal Lady and Rushmore.
Jockey Mick Dee was held up for a run until the final 200m, but once he eased The Chairman into the clear the gelding put the race away with a good turn of foot.
The Chairman won from consistent Bendigo galloper Bee Jay Zed, with Loveheart Lass third.
“Coming around the bend I was weighing up my options as to which way I could go,’’ Dee said.
“Lucikly I was travelling well and had to wait for the run to present.
“This horse could win in town. I think he’ll go to race over the (Flemington) carnival now and he should be competitive.”
The Chairman has raced over 2000m before, but Dee said the gelding had some learning to do before he could be classed a genuine stayer.
“He needs to learn to settle a bit better, he still travelled a bit strong then,’’ he said.
“If he learns to settle, he’ll get the 2000m no worries.”
Second favourite King Of England appeared to have every chance and was very dour in running into fourth place. He’ll be hard to beat once he gets out to 2400m and beyond.
