Six local cyclists teamed up to raise money to help children fight cancer during the Great Cycle Challenge, a fundraiser for the Children's Medical Research Institute.

The institute develops treatments and searches for a cure for childhood cancer.

The local riders are part of the Pedal Radio Group, an offshoot of the Bendigo Amateur Radio and Electronics Club.

The group regularly hits the roads and trails using bikes equipped with antennas and other communication equipment.

According Great Cycle Challenge website the group is less than 70km short of its goal with five full days left for time in the saddle.

Member Kevin Crocket said sometimes the group rode in groups, sometimes individually, always keeping in touch over the airwaves.

“It keeps us talking and gives us something to do,” he said.

Mr Crockett said that when many people heard of amateur radio they thought of community radio. However BAREC was a club for electronics and radio enthusiasts.
