Patrols will be regular at the event while random breath testing units will take over roads in and out of White Hills.
Acting Senior Sergeant Len Ladner said the strong police presence will also be visible in the CBD.
“Previously crowds have been fairly well behaved and it would be nice to keep that trend going,” he said.
“We request that members of the public also look after each other, have a designated driver organised and utilise public transport.”
Sergeant Geoff Annand said traffic would also be an issue at the start and end of the day.
“Traffic becomes hectic after the cup is run, so if you’re trying and leave early, we ask that people be patient,” he said.
”I am aware that we have caught one or two people (drunk-driving) in previous years but largely people have lifts pre-arranged.
“Considering the police operation, you can underline the word ‘idiot’ for anyone caught drink-driving.”
The Bendigo Jockey Club also reminded people that no alcohol, glass or metal utensils or knives can be bought into the racecourse.
“Plastic knives are alright but any cheese knives or utensils will be confiscated as will any alcohol,” a spokeswoman said.
People can take in food and soft drink, picnic rugs and foldable camper chairs but stackable chairs and any large outdoor structures such as umbrellas or marquees are not allowed.
Wednesday is expected to be partly cloudy with a top of 21 degrees. The Bendigo Cup will be run at 4pm.
