Herbert made a brave charge at amateur star Coletta in Sunday’s final round.
The Neangar Park product trailed Coletta by as many as seven shots early in the final round.
Birdies on the fifth and sixth holes, a brilliant eagle on the par-five 12th and a near hole-in-one on the par-three 13th saw Herbert edge within one shot of the lead.
Herbert’s winning hopes drowned on the par-five 16th when his second shot went right into the pond.
He finished the tournament at four-under par, three shots behind Coletta.
The silver lining for Herbert was he collected the major prize money because of Coletta’s amateur status.
The 20-year-old pocketed a tidy cheque for $16,500 and he’ll rise about 55 places on the Australian PGA Tour order of merit.
