Cystic Fibrosis Victoria acting chief executive officer Felicia Welstead said there were about 20 families in the area dealing with the disorder.
“We have quite a community in Bendigo that have cystic fibrosis so that’s why we choose to run an event up here,” she said.
“When you think about all their friends and relatives and all those that support those people it becomes quite a number that are affected by this disease.”
Ms Welstead said the $20,000 to $30,000 expected to be raised on the day would go towards helping families manage the financial pressures that come with cystic fibrosis.
“A nebuliser costs about $550 and needs to be replaced every three to five years so we help them pay for those,” she said.
“We run fitness programs as well so we’ll help pay for kid’s swimming lessons or trampolines because all of that’s fantastic physiotherapy to help clear the lungs.”
