Police say the 58-year-old Brunswick East woman was struck after stepping onto the road in Nicholson Street about 8.45pm.

The male driver of the car, which was carrying two passengers, stopped at the scene.

Paramedics attended but the woman died at the scene.

Her death brings Victoria's road toll to 234, 29 more than for this time last year.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and urge any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
