The 20-year-old was traded to Melbourne on Thursday, less than two hours before the trade deadline.
GWS sent McKenna and picks 51 and 69 in the national draft to the Demons, for picks 57 and 59.
McKenna, a former Australian under-19s cricketer, was originally drafted by the Giants at pick 23 in the 2014 draft.
Demons general manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said the club was delighted to gain McKenna after monitoring him closely for the past two years.
"He is a good-decision maker who uses the ball well," he said.
"His endurance is a strong point of his game and he is a versatile player that can play all parts of the ground.”
A hip injury limited McKenna to just 10 NEAFL games this season. He kicked 45 goals for Gisborne in the 2014 BFNL season.
