UPDATE 2.45pm: Detective sergeant Steve Rainey of the Bendigo crime investigation unit confirmed burglars broke into the rear of the shop between 6pm last night and 6am this morning.

“An unknown offender or offenders have gone through the rear window and got into the office area where they’ve found two safes and used tools to effectively destroy them,” he said.
“One was opened and the contents taken which included a quantity of cash and another one was unable to be opened.”
Sergeant Rainey said the burglars had effectively bashed their way into the first safe before fleeing the scene with the cash and appealed for anyone with any information to come forward.
“There would have been significant noise at some stage during the night,” he said.

UPDATE, 9.15am: The Spring Gully General Store was reopen to the public at 9.15am on Thursday.
EARLIER: Police are today responding to reports of a burglary at the Spring Gully General Store.
It is believed thieves broke into the Spring Gully Road cafe via a rear window on Wednesday night, stealing cash.
Staff awaiting police arrival also said the building had sustained some damage during the incident.
The general store was again open to patrons at 9.15am on Thursday.
