The star midfielder and former BFNL inter-league and Eaglehawk assistant coach Shawn Filo have been appointed co-coaches of a Roos’ squad that fell away dramatically in the second half of 2016 and narrowly missed the finals.
“We need to get all the players to buy in to what we want to run with our structures and professionalism,’’ Greer said.
“We want to set a good culture from day dot. Even things like club functions… the players need to start supporting those functions and doing more around the club.
“Little things like that will help and (on the field) we’d love to get a couple of more key targets. That’s what we’ll be targeting in the pre-season.”
Greer was confident there’d be few departures from the Roos’ senior list.
“Shawn and I have already been on the phone talking to players,’’ Greer said.
“We’ve still got a few more of the younger players to talk to you yet, but we’re very comfortable that the core group will stay together.”
Greer said coaching had long been one of his aims.
“I’ve always been passionate about my footy and I always wanted to coach down the track,’’ Greer said.
“It’s come a bit quicker than I thought, but the opportunity arose and I’m looking forward to it.
“I’m really keen to get the club back into the finals and I’m confident Shawn and I can get the job done.”
Greer had experience playing under a co-coaching system at his former club Yarrawonga.
“I definitely wanted a co-coaching system,’’ Greer said.
“It’s worked well at Yarrawonga over the past seven years or so. I think it’s a great system.
“I’ll be modelling how I go about it in the same way that Drew Barnes did at Yarrawonga.
“He was a perfect example of how to go about it (playing and coaching).”
KFFNC president Greg McClure said Greer and Filo have the right balance to lead the Roos back to the finals.
“Corey and Shawn have an opportunity to take on a team that won 10 games in 2016 and help push Kangaroo Flat senior football into a finals position for the first time in a decade,’’ McClure said.
“With this appointment we feel that we have sourced the best available coaches to progress our club and we hope that our players will respond to the new direction.”
The Roos will also go with a co-coaching system in the reserves, with Ross Smith and Steve Ritchie in charge.
Mark Gillespie, who led the under-16s to the grand final in the BJFL, has been appointed as the new under-18 coach.
