CAPTAIN: Tim Wood.
LAST SEASON: 5th – 6-6-1.
ARRIVALS: Daniel Major.
DEPARTURES: Scott Woodman, Hamish Schumacher.
SUMMARY: Two key outs with both Golden Square’s leading run-scorer and wicket-taker from last season no longer at the club.
Opening batsman Hamish Schumacher topped Square’s runs last season with 314, but is now playing at Bundoora.
And Woodman, who took 25 wickets last season and was also Square’s leading wicket-taker in 2014-15, is taking the step-up to play Premier Cricket at Carlton.
“We relied fairly heavily on Scotty with the ball when he played the past two years, so it’s certainly not ideal losing him, so it’s going to be up to a few others to step-up now,” captain Tim Wood said.
In what’s a further blow for Square, Josh Blencowe, who missed had a breakout season last summer with the ball, is likely to be sidelined early with glandular fever.
With the bowling thinning out, veteran Grant Connelly is expected to be back in the first XI mix, while at the other end of the scale, the club boasts one of Bendigo’s up-and-coming stars in Zane Keighran, who has a big future ahead of him.
The only inclusion at MyJet Oval is wicket-keeper batsman Daniel Major, who returns to the club, but will miss the early part of the season.
