HAVING made the finals of the Loddon Valley Football League 17 years in a row, new Calivil United coach Brandt Fleming will stick with the same formula that has been the backbone at the Demons – relying mainly on locals.

Fleming will take the reins of Calivil United in 2013, replacing Cameron Carter, who stood down after this year’s elimination final loss to Bears Lagoon-Serpentine following two years at the helm.
Calivil United has been a remarkably consistent club, having played in every LVFL finals series since 1995, during which it has won eight premierships.
“The core of the list is still there, and we’ve got a good group of young kids coming through, so we’ll be looking for them to take the step up next year,” Fleming said yesterday.
“We’ll be trying to keep it as local as we can, which is what the club has a very good history of doing.
“It’s such a good family club, so we’ll be trying to keep the model going that the club has had in place.
“Probably not a lot is going to change around the club, apart from my name as coach.”
Fleming – a key forward – joined Calivil United this year after a two-season stint with Mount Pleasant in the Heathcote District Football League.
He has a strong tennis background, and hopes to draw on some of his coaching experience in that sport in his new role at the helm of the Demons.
“I ran the Bendigo squad for a couple of years, so there’s different types of fitness things I did there that I can use to hopefully, keep people interested with the training and that type of thing,” Fleming said.
This will be Fleming’s first senior coaching role.
“Having done the tennis coaching in the past, I’m looking forward to this new challenge,” Fleming said.
“It’s an opportunity you don’t get too often to coach a senior team.”
