Bendigo all-rounder James Ryan stood out for Victoria Country on day one of the national under-17 cricket championships in Queensland.

Victoria Country (203) was beaten by Western Australia (234), but Ryan showed his class by top-scoring with 72 and he also took 2-48 with his leg-spinners. Ryan batted at number eight and came in with his side in all sorts of trouble at 6-60. He was last man out, faced 93 balls and hit six fours and two sixes.
Golden Square’s Zane Keighran made six as the Cricket Australia XI was thrashed by NSW Metro.
The CA XI was bundled out for 67, with NSW Metro passing the total for the loss of three wickets. Austin Waugh, son of former Australian captain Steve Waugh, made 38 not out for NSW Metro.
The CA XI plays Tasmania in round two on Tuesday, while Victoria Country tackles South Australia.
