Melbourne was hit with a short downpour about 3.30pm on Monday, and there is more to come later on Monday evening and into Tuesday morning.

"There will be some short-lived showers," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Keris Arndt said.

"There's still a risk of thunderstorms and some hail."

It will pave the way for an icy blast on Friday, so to the thousands of football fans planning to line city streets to watch grand finalists make their way to the MCG: bring a raincoat.

Mr Arndt said the wet weather was being fuelled by cold winds carrying "enhanced instability", charging towards Melbourne from Bass Strait .

The worst of the storms would hit northern Victoria, he said, although sporadic, light showers were forecast for this week, including Friday.

"At this stage it doesn't look like it will be a wet grand final," he said. "It will be cold and cloudy on Friday so the parade is not going to be much fun.

"But then it does look like it clears up for the final."
