Leading senior constable Wayne Cairnes of Castlemaine police said the 85-year-old Castlemaine woman’s scooter was struck by a black utility as she crossed the railway tracks on Johnstone Street at about 3pm.
“Her wheel became stuck in one of the railway tracks that crosses the road and as a result she’s changed her direction of movement and a car’s come past at the same time and just nudged her causing her to fall from the vehicle and she’s had minor injuries as result,” he said.
“He’s stopped and he’s got out to check to make sure she was OK and then he’s just jumped in his car and driven off so it’s a hit and run effectively, he should have stopped and left his details.”
Leading Senior Constable Cairnes said police were keen for anyone who saw the incident and may be able to identify the driver of the vehicle to come forward.
“There was quite a lot of traffic in the area at the time and we have taken witness statements but if anyone was driving past and saw further, contact myself or Castlemaine police,” he said.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Castlemaine police station on 5470 4100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
