Bendigo Sustainability Group has become the city’s first community organisation to pledge to shift their financial agreements away from corporations funding fossil fuel development and climate change.
The group signed the Central Victorian Fossil Fuel Free Charter at its Bendigo launch last week.
BSG President Chris Weir called on others to follow suit.
“It makes sense for community based organisations, businesses and individuals to align their electricity, banking, super and other accounts with their social and environmental values” he said.
“This action, known as ‘divestment’ is part of our mission to create the space for renewable energy, a safe climate and a fair deal for generations to come.”
The group hosted the launch of the Central Victorian Fossil Fuel Free Charter at the Queens Arms Hotel in Quarry Hill on September 12.
Speakers included Jacynta Fuamatu from 350 Pacific and Pablo Brait from Market Forces.
