For the second year in a row the Superoos were beaten by Bridgewater in the Loddon Valley Football-Netball League grand final, going down by 50 points.
“Our fitness cost us today, and I’m hoping that it really stings the boys and gives them the motivation to turn up for pre-season and really take it seriously,” first-year coach Maddern said.
“If we can keep this side together and add to it, I’ve got no doubt we can match Bridgewater, but we’ve got to get fitter.”
While the Superoos didn’t have the legs to match the all-conquering Bridgewater, they were also left to lament a lack of conversion in the first half.
Mitiamo kicked 4.9 in the first half, and while the Superoos only had two less scoring shots, they trailed by 27 points at the main break.
“If we had taken those chances we certainly could have got some massive pressure onto them and you just never know what can happen in a grand final,” said Maddern, who kicked one goal to end the season with 105.
“We didn’t take our opportunities and in the end they had too many legs for us.”
The Superoos didn’t finalise their team until just before the game, with Tom Grant playing after battling a groin injury in the lead-up.
