In her lecture, Photography, Death and Science: The photographs of Claudia Terstappen, La Pietra will focus on A Language of the Vanishing, an exhibition of Terstappen’s photographs to be exhibited at the VAC from September 28 to November 6.
Combining two major series of work, the exhibition images are sourced from the animal specimens locked away in cabinets at the Natural History Museum in Berlin, and the animals struck and left for dead along the roadside in the Australian bush.
These images reveal the power of the photograph to arrest what is small and fleeting and immortalise a vanishing world.
