Women not to blame for men’s crimes
Telling schoolgirls to dress "modestly" to avoid ending up on a porn website is a bit like telling them they should wear the hijab – cover up because boys can't control themselves.

It seems, the world over, women are blamed for the appalling behaviour of a few boys. Why don't we call it out for what it is?

New organics service will bring benefits
In response to the letter from Mary Fry (“Organics bin an unwelcome addition”, Bendigo Advertiser, August 22).
While the City of Greater Bendigo is currently introducing the new organics service to over 40,000 households in urban Bendigo and Marong, it is a long-term aim of the city’s Waste and Resource Management Strategy 2014-2019 to extend the organics service in the future.
The city is currently examining the feasibility and systems required to include cafes, restaurants and retailers that produce food waste because as a community we cannot continue to send this re-useable resource to landfill where it creates dangerous methane and other greenhouse gas emissions.
As readers will appreciate, the task of introducing the service to urban residents alone has been a considerable one, however, I am looking forward to the environmental benefits that the new service will bring.

Permits a win for fitness fanatics
Recently I received my permit that details where I can train my clients and at what times. I'm absolutely over the moon!
Since I moved to Bendigo, I've watched a huge explosion in the number of trainers and sporting clubs who are making use of our fantastic public spaces.
Overcrowding, public access and safety, as well as degradation of some areas, has meant that those of us who take the usage of these areas as a great privilege and treat that privilege accordingly have been tarred with the same brush as those who don't; those who pay the public and the facilities no respect whatsoever.
So here's to a managed, responsible result that will hopefully see more Bendigonians enjoying our outdoor spaces in comfort.

Politicians only in it for themselves
In the Bendigo Advertiser on August 17, the story on the National Party whip in Parliament House welcoming new MPs stated Parliament House is “like a feedlot with alcohol”.
At last a member of federal government finally stating what goes on in Canberra.
No doubt the new members of parliament would have been told the best way to get their living away from home allowance of $273 a night and rort the system.
Well done to a politician speaking the truth on what really goes on in federal government in Canberra - eating and drinking.

Equality vote will set a dangerous precedent
Former High Court justice Michael Kirby is correct. Using a plebiscite to make a decision on a controversial issue is a dangerous precedent. It is alien to Australia's system of representative democracy.
If Malcolm Turnbull wants to show Australians that he is a leader with guts, he should put the vote for marriage equality directly to the vote in parliament.

Turnbull give pause for thought
Seeing Mr Turnbull giving $5 to a homeless person made me realise I've been wrong all these years – trickle-down economics does work.
