A local street artist is calling on Bendigonians to draw a distinction between vandalism and art after a rampage of tagging in recent weeks.
The 19-year-old La Trobe University fine art student who pastes drawings on walls under the name of ‘Marcsi’, said recent graffiti attacks in car parks bore no similarity to the nocturnal activities of street artists.
“The fundamental difference with tagging is that there is no thought process involved, it’s just a name, it’s just saying ‘I was here’,” he said.
“The work we do we put a lot of effort into, it is just another way of exhibiting, of showing art to the public so that art isn’t always just stuck in a gallery.
“Tagging...there’s no art there, it’s just writing on a wall.”
But despite putting thought into how he goes about his work, Marcsi’s “dreams up” his creations in a fluid process.
“Some of my characters and creatures are inspired by movies and books, some by people I’ve met,” he said.
