“That’s when my cancer was picked up – because of my normal health check,” he said.
“I can’t express enough that that’s what men need to do – to have an annual health check where they go and have a complete medical with their doctor.
“Not just for their prostate, but their general health.”
A giant pair of jocks was unfurled from the balcony of the Bendigo Bank building on Wednesday, bearing the words: “Bendigo prostate awareness week: Have you had yours checked lately?”
From Wednesday evening, iconic Bendigo buildings will be lit blue to raise awareness of men’s health and prostate cancer. Among the first will be the poppet head.
An estimated one in six men are at risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer by their 85th birthday, according to Cancer Australia.
The estimated number of deaths from the disease this year is almost 3400.
