Bendigo Girl Guides need help to reach jamboree goal

NEEDING to raise almost $20,000 for next year’s national jamboree, the Bendigo Girl Guides will today hold a Craft Market Day.

The group needs to raise more than $18,000 to get to the jamboree in Tasmania, and the market day is one of the fund-raising activities planned this year in a bid to reach their goal.

Girl Guides district leader Petina Blackwell encouraged the community to visit the market.

She said anyone interested in craft or being creative should come along. “We will have stallholders and local businesses taking part in the day,” Ms Blackwell said.

“There will be local craft people making things and people can come and get tips on scrapbooking and knitting.”

Ms Blackwell said 22 members of the Bendigo Girl Guides would attend the jamboree, which is held once every three years.

She said the jamboree was all about the girls having fun and gaining independence.

“It is about learning to take care of themselves, learning leadership skills through the different activities and focusing on the environment,” she said.

“The girls attending are aged between 10 and 17 years old and it is a great opportunity for them to meet girls from around Australia as well as countries like America, England and Japan.”

The market will be held at the Guide Hall in Atkins Street, Bendigo, from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Entry is $2.
