Set up by a dominant first half, the Magpies prevailed 12.10 (82) to 4.16 (40) – their first BFNL victory at Gisborne since 2001.
“We played a good brand of footy in the first half in particular… we defended well, but full credit to Gisborne, they came back at us in the second half,” Magpies coach Shane Robertson said.
“Overall, I was happy with the performance today.”
The Magpies were in control at half-time with a 43-point buffer – 8.8 to 1.7 – before they were narrowly outscored by one point by the young Bulldogs in the second half.
In what was the Magpies’ sixth win of the season, Justin Dorward (two goals), Jarryd Graham and skipper Zach Hansford were their best.
Gisborne has now gone five-straight games of scoring less than 50 points.
The Bulldogs were best served by skipper Jarrad Lynch, Kane Grbac and Eamon McKenna, who continued his consistent season.
