David “DJ” Johnson was the most dominant guard in the SEABL in the late 1980s.
DJ spent four years with the Braves and averaged an outstanding 47.8 points per game.
The highlight of his career with the Braves was his 70-point haul in the 1988 SEABL grand final against the Bulleen Boomers.
His 70 points, 11 rebounds and six assists led the Braves to a 121-118 win – the club’s first SEABL title.
The Braves had trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter of the grand final before Johnson lit up the Broadmeadows Stadium.
“We just couldn’t stop DJ,’’ Bulleen coach Bill Tomlinson said after the game.
“We tried our best players on him, including guard Andrej Lemanis, but we couldn’t hold him.”
DJ and his 1988 Braves’ team-mates will be presented to the crowd before tip-off of Saturday night’s game at Bendigo Stadium.
Johnson and the 1988 Braves are the guests of honour for a function at the game. The function runs from 7pm-9pm and is open to all past players and sponsors of the club. To book, contact Brock Rogers at Bendigo Stadium.
The Lady Braves game tips-off at 6pm on Saturday, with the men’s clash at 8pm.
We just couldn’t stop DJ.
