The school’s latest effort, Into The Woods, will open at Castlemaine Town Hall on Thursday night.
Director Darren Lowe said the school had begun to take on bigger production.
“We started a tradition, over the last couple years, where we take on some big shows,” he said.
“We did Grease last year and have also done Thirteen and Oliver. Into The Woods is the logical extension.”
Into The Woods was created by Stephen Sondheim in 1986 and was last year made into a feature film starring Meryl Streep, James Corden, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick and Johnny Depp.
Combining a number of fairy tales, including Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood, the musical follows a baker and his wife.
When they discover they can’t have children, the baker and his wife enlist the help of a witch who orders them to collect “the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold”.
Mr Lowe said there was no shortage of students eager to get involved in drama.
More than 60 students will take part in Into the Woods.
“Even if there isn’t a chorus, we want to try and find ways to include (a) chorus,” he said.
“That can be difficult. Into The Woods is probably written for a smaller cast but we found ways to include students in there who don’t have a speaking role.”
Into The Woods is also the most musical production the school has done.
It shows with a number of impressive voices on display through the performance.
“There’s not much dialogue in this production, it is the most musical we have gone,” he said.
Earlier in the year, Castlemaine Secondary College’s VCE students also performed The Servant of Two Masters and The Importance of Being Earnest.
“That was part of their studies but this is more of an extra-curricular, whole-school type of thing,” he said.
Castlemaine Secondary College’s production of Into The Woods is on at Castlemaine Town Hall on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 7pm.
