The winless Colts weren’t expected to challenge the Scorpions, but it took until the dying minutes for Epsom to seal the three points 3-1.
Teenager Alex Caldow scored a brace for Epsom to take his season tally to five, while Harley Richardson scored the Scorpions’ third goal via the penalty spot.
Joel Gitsham scored Colts’ goal early in the second half.
Epsom remains one point clear of Eaglehawk after the Hawks beat Spring Gully 2-1.
Chris Hopley opened the scoring for the Hawks in the 59th minute before Ethan Hunter leveled the scores for the Reds in the 77th minute.
It took an 83rd minute goal from Eaglehawk coach Greg Thomas to break the deadlock.
Moama-Echuca Border Raiders handed Golden City an 8-2 thumping. The game was in the balance at half-time, but the Raiders outscored the home side 6-0 in the second half. Basile Gentil scored four goals for Moama, while Riley Hayton and Pa Naing Paw found the back of the net for City.
In the women’s division, Eaglehawk continued its resurgence by defeating Spring Gully 6-2.
The win moved the third-placed Hawks to within two points of the second-placed Reds.
Charlotte Edlin scored twice for the Hawks, who have won five of their past six matches. Azhia Claridge, Amy Skvarc, Chloe Parker and Grace Edlin were the other goal scorers. Carlee Frankel and Ally Van Dalen scored for the Reds.
Bottom team Golden City produced its best performance of the season when it fell 4-2 to Moama.
Marli Fox and Abbey Thompson were the goal scorers for the Rams, while Lily Kettle, Paige Pinson, Brittany Sands and Natalie Sands scored for the Raiders.
Strathdale kept pace with Eaglehawk and Moama when it held off Swan Hill 4-2. The Blues are on the same points as the Hawks and Raiders thanks to a hat-trick from Jasmine Lina and one goal from Kelsie Rowlands.
