The City of Greater Bendigo has begun sending out 57,610 rates notices to residents.
Many residents will notice a new charge of $71 (pro rata of the full year charge of $86), for the new organics waste collection service.
The new service is due to commence in September.
City organisation support director Kerryn Ellis said this year was the first year the state government’s rate cap came into effect, but not all residents would see a 2.5 per cent rate increase on their rates notices.
“Properties in the City of Greater Bendigo are revalued every two years in line with the Local Government Act and 2016 is a revaluation year,” Ms Ellis said.
“Some people will see their rates go up by more than 2.5 per cent and others will see them go up by less. This is because changes in your property value will impact on the rates you pay.
“While the revaluation does impact upon the rates levied on individual properties, it’s important to remember that increasing property values across Greater Bendigo does not mean that the City raises more rates overall.
“The revaluation just redistributes rates across the municipality in line with changed property values.”
Payments can be made in instalments or in full by February 15, 2017. If residents pay their rates in full on or before September 30, 2016 they will receive a 1.5 per cent discount.
If residents believe that their property has been incorrectly valued, they should contact the City’s Customer Support team on 5434 6000.
