Kyneton Sergeant Carl Dalton said ice affected both the north and south lanes, predominately near Jackson’s Creek bridge.
He said there were no injuries to report, but that some cars crashed into barriers.
Police were controlling traffic at the scene from 7am until about 9am, when the icy conditions cleared.
Traffic was reduced to a single lane in each direction for a time.
EARLIER: Central Victorian police have urged drivers to beware of icy conditions on the region’s roads.
Kyneton Leading Senior Constable Lucinda Marciniak said black ice caused several cars travelling on the Calder Freeway during the early hours of the morning to come off the road.
“People need to take a lot more care and slow down,” she said.
Temperatures dropped to below freezing overnight, reaching a low of -0.7 degrees at Bendigo Airport, the coldest morning thus far this month.
VicRoads issued a warning about black ice at the Calder Freeway near Honeypot Road, Macedon.
“VicRoads advises drivers to slow down and drive carefully,” the warning reads.
“VicRoads reminds motorists that wet and cold weather can reduce visibility and cause roads to be more slippery.
“Some roads in alpine areas may be affected by snow, ice or fog and drivers should carry chains and fit them if required.”
VicRoads said people could phone the 24-hour 13 11 70 hotline for more information on snow alerts and road closures.
