And that love of purple will be reflected on Saturday when Heathcote hosts the inaugural Georgia Edsall-French Memorial Game in the Heathcote District Football-Netball League.
The round 16 game against Huntly at Pigeon Park will mark one year on from 15-year-old Georgia’s death in a car crash in Queensland.
Saturday’s memorial game will feature Heathcote footballers wearing purple jumpers and netballers in purple uniforms.
The netball courts will be decorated in purple, the football fence will be lined with purple ribbon and balloons, while before the senior game purple balloons will be released at 2pm.
The memorial day for Georgia has been driven by Dean Segafredo, who from being based in Sydney has organised the purple football jumpers, while the Heathcote and District Community Bank has helped with the purple netball uniforms
“Georgia was very passionate about the club and had tremendous values, which shine through the club,” Georgia’s mum, Kym Edsall, said this week.
“Purple was Georgia’s favourite color and Dean Segafredo has been fantastic in being able to organise the purple jumpers.
“We’re asking everyone who comes along to wear a splash of purple.”
Georgia was a member of Heathcote’s under-17 netball premiership team in 2013 and last year posthumously finished runner-up in the under-17 best and fairest.
“There were more than 2000 people at Georgia’s funeral and a lot of kids and people out there mourning. This Saturday is a great way for people to get together and support each other, and that’s what Georgia was all about,” Kym said.
“We want to try to make some good from bad, and having the purple day will bring good people together.
“The support of the club and the whole of the community has been huge over the past 12 months and Saturday will be a chance for us as well to be able to say thankyou.”
Among the netballers to be wearing purple on Saturday will be Tahlia Lawrence, who went to school and played netball with Georgia.
“It’s a chance for everyone to be happy and represent what Georgia was about… she was so bright and bubbly,” Tahlia said.
“If everyone was able to just be happy for a day at such a sad time then that will be good and will help everyone continue with the healing.”
Also playing netball in honour of Georgia on Saturday will be her former team-mate Kodi Jacques, who has swapped netball for football this year.
“Knowing Georgia for a very long time I really wanted to come back and play Georgia’s game and support the club,” Kodi said.
Saints president Andrew Conforti said the memorial game in honour of Georgia would become an annual fixture for the club.
“Georgia was a fantastic netballer and person and the family has been renowned around the club for years,” Conforti said.
“To lose someone at such a young age has been devastating for the family and club, but through adversity the community has really come together and will do so again on Saturday in honour of Georgia.”
Georgia attended Bendigo South East College, which has struck an award in her honour presented to the Year 9 student that best displays her attributes.
This Saturday’s games: Elmore v Mount Pleasant, Colbinabbin v LBU, Heathcote v Huntly, North Bendigo v White Hills. Leitchville-Gunbower bye.
