Shadowland is a new performance developed by Pilobolus and combines shadow acts, dance, circus and concert aspects to tell a story.
The performance incorporates multiple moving screens of different sizes and shapes to create an evening-length performance that merges projected images and front-of-screen choreography.
Pilobolus is returning to Australia after a successful visit last year.
Mark Fucik, a performer in the show, said they are looking forward to exploring new parts of Australia.
“Last year we went to Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney so it is exciting for us to get to explore more of Australia,” he said.
Shadowland will visit Bendigo on August 21, after visiting Frankston, Horsham and Geelong.
Piloborus developed their performance skills and were originally asked to create a car from human bodies for a commercial.
They also performed at the 79th Academy Awards where they recreated posters for films including The Devil Wears Prada, Little Miss Sunshine and Snakes on a Plane.
“We thought it was cool and that we could turn it into show and include live dance as well as composite shadow images made by bodies,” Fucik said.
”There's always big challenges and it is a fight between something looking realistic and making it read well (on stage).”
It takes a great deal of rehearsal and choreography for Pilobolus to create the Shadowland, which follows a girl through a dream-like.
“There’s a lot of communication behind the screen but the choreography is like any other dance,” Fucik said.
“As we roll out to an image, someone calls out an eight count. It can be tedious but there’s that moment when (the audience reacts)..
“Sometimes we do hear the audience but a lot of times rely on the stage technicians to tell you where an audible gasp was. The screen is down so there is a separation but you can always hear kids giggling or laughing.”
