The meditative atmosphere created by the work in Gallery One has given visitors pause to contemplate the fields of colour and space within the confines of the canvas, whereas the work in the neighbouring gallery intrigues in a more expansive fashion.
Initially surprising the viewer with what appears to be vastly opposing methods and outcomes between the spaces, the video of Keating’s dynamic public work equally mesmerises and invites reflection. Curator Michael Brennan notes in his catalogue essay that Keating solicits this idea himself, suggesting the canvasses are a “window into the larger works”.
Response Paintings and South East Park Proposition conclude at the La Trobe University VAC this Sunday.
