Paul Eliades, whose wife, Emily, owns Hairem Scarem Hair and Beauty, said the glass front door of the Strathdale hairdressing shop was found smashed at 8.30 on Wednesday morning.
But Mr Eliades said those responsible failed to gain access to the shop and left empty-handed.
Police officers attended the scene, dusting the door for prints.
Leading Senior Constable Lee Bullock said the incident was unusual for the area and there were no other reports of damage.
While it was unclear what was used to cause the damage, the Bendigo police officer said a screwdriver was located near the scene.
Mr Eliades estimated it would cost as much as $500 to replace the damaged glass.
