Four Lions decided to write, record, master and release an EP – titled Golden Triangle – on a tight four-day schedule.
They wrote songs on Friday and Saturday, recorded the EP on Sunday, mastered it on Monday and released it online early on Tuesday morning.
Band frontman Shann Lions said he wanted to do something that was a bit different.
“I wanted to try and do something that I thought hadn’t been attempted before,” he said.
“It may have but to my knowledge it hasn’t.
“The concept was trying to do something different. I’ve been asked if it’s just a marketing ploy but as muso, me and the boys work under pressure and love the spontaneity in recording sessions.”
Shann said the short timeline also cut out a lot of procrastination and critiquing that comes with the recording process.
“Normally you play songs for year and when you finally get to recording, you don’t have that same energy as when you were learning the song and making it up,” he said.
“We also certainly wanted something musically different. It’s more of a post-punk sound.
“We have dipped our toes in that water before with the odd track but our next album will be pretty cohesive to our first.”
The EP was recorded in the traditional reel-to-reel, analog format and has themes centered around Bendigo and it’s history.
Two songs – Welcome Stranger and Sun Loong – reflect that in their titles.
Now that the EP is out, the band will celebrate with four gigs in four days at the end of this week.
They will start at the Retreat Hotel in Brunswick on Thursday, head to the Royal George Hotel in Kyneton on Friday, play at the Golden Vine on Saturday and finish with a Sunday session at the Lockington Hotel.
“The ultimate goal is the recording. I don't think about promotion too much,” Shann said.
“We just wanted to put it out there and if people hear it, that’s great. It’s a bonus.”
