A fire sparked on Pioneer Road, near One Tree Hill forest, in Strathfieldsaye on Sunday was the third in the nearby area in less than 48 hours.
Constable Rod McDowell said police attended after it was reported a group of teenagers fled the scene.
A CFA spokeswoman said the small grass fire was put under control within 10 minutes but had the potential to spread further before it was extinguished.
Constable McDowell said the fire was being treated as suspicious.
He said the fact there were a number of fires being lit on dry grass was particularly dangerous.
“It’s unclear whether the fires are all related, but they were possibly all lit by the same offenders. We want to put out the warning that with bushfire season approaching, this behaviour could have serious consequences,” Constable McDowell said.
“It’s arson, and criminal damage that could lead to more serious charges.”
Constable McDowell said anyone who came across suspicious activity should contact Bendigo police.
