Bendigo Spirit puts juniors in spotlight at home games

STARS of the future will have the chance to be part of big-league basketball during Bendigo Bank Spirit home games this season.

Under a new initiative, girls from local primary schools will play little league matches during the half-time break of Spirit’s WNBL matches held at the Bendigo Stadium.

The aim is to show young players and the wider community that a well-developed pathway exists for girls in this region that can take them all the way from their junior competitions through to elite level.

They need look no further than home-grown legend, Olympic and world championship medallist Kristi Harrower, to see how far they could potentially go in the sport.

The little league concept tips off this Saturday night, when girls from Girton Grammar line up against St Therese’s Primary School during half-time at Spirit’s first home game against the West Coast Waves.

The girls who play each receive a Bendigo Spirit uniform to keep, entry to the game and a showbag.

Local primary schools who want to join in the little league program can email for more details.
