Despite having a number of their best 22 on the sidelines, the Storm won 17.15 (117) to 10.7 (67).
“Castlemaine were very good,’’ Storm coach Darryl Wilson said.
“We got a little bit more control in the second half and probably hurt them on their turnovers a few times.”
Tom Bartholomew, Shannon Geary and teenager Matt Harvey kicked four goals each for the Storm.
Shannon and Kallen Geary were best for Strathfieldsaye.
David Stephens, in-form midfielder Tommy Horne and veteran James O’Brien were best for the Magpies. Key forwards Mark Ramsey and Rhys Ford kicked seven goals between them.
The last time the sides met the Storm won by 91 points, so it was an improved performance from Castlemaine and the Magpies will take some confidence into their crucial next round clash with Kyneton.
