MEANWHILE, teams from each of the five major cities will compete in the inaugural season of the AFL's eight-club national women's league in 2017.
AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick on Wednesday named the Adelaide Crows, Brisbane Lions, Carlton, Collingwood, Fremantle, GWS Giants, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs as the successful applicants who will have teams in the first season.
The Geelong Cats, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda and the West Coast Eagles have each been granted provisional licences with a view to entering the competition later, some as early as 2018.
The AFL has confirmed that the inaugural national women's league will be an eight-week competition to be played next February and March.
