A night of retail therapy has launched a Bendigo-based campaign for the prevention of family violence.
Shop to Stop Violence Against Women, an event hosted by Merinda earlier this month, raised $560 for Equity Prevents Violence.
A quarter of the sales from the evening were donated to the campaign, which is a joint initiative by the Community Foundation for Central Victoria and Women’s Health Loddon Mallee.
Equity Prevents Violence aims to increase awareness of the underlying drivers of violence against women, including gender inequality, rigid gender stereotypes, and cultures accepting of violence.
“It was a pleasure to host an event that raises funds for Equity Prevents Violence to bring gender equity to the forefront of the conversations we are having in our communities,” Merinda owner Ellie Gammon said.
“This is not only a worthy initiative, but one that helps to evolve the attitudes in our workplaces, homes, and community on a whole.”
Community Foundation for Central Victoria chief executive Ann Lansberry thanked the community for supporting the event.
“It was fantastic to see so many ladies come together to support Medina’s wonderful ‘Shop to Stop’ event to raise funds for the Equity Prevents Violence campaign,” she said.
It was the first fundraiser of the campaign, which will include participation in central Victoria’s inaugural Big Give community giving day on September 1.
