A bridge with no-name in Greater Bendigo is set to be named, and VicTrack wants you to help.
The state-owned enterprise has selected five names from public suggestions, after running a naming competition since late last year for the Huntly-Fosterville road bridge.
The bridge is the first of 40 high-risk bridges to be named under VicTrack’s online bridge naming competition.
The company says bridge names are important to help to determine precise locations during emergency events and natural disaster responses.
It called on names can also reflect the culture and heritage of the bridges relevant to a local community.
The final shortlisted nominations for the VicTrack Bridge Naming Competition public vote are:
- Bill Pacholli Bridge - a World War one veteran and well-known local identify
- Burgoyne Bridge - unofficially name used by residents, possibly named after Thomas Burgoyne, a local builder and gold-rush era digger
- Esma Turner Bridge - a long-term resident of Huntly, and a deeply committed local historian
- Dhelk Baring Bridge - Dja Dja Wurrung indigenous word meaning ‘good pathway or track’
- Ellis Bridge - a pioneering family in the district.
Voting will be open until the end of the day on Monday, June 13.
