Golden Square is seen as the hot favourite in the under-14 senior division, but Saturday’s game against Sandhurst proved it is not a one-horse race.
The Dragons looked the better side for the first half as they raced to a 19-point win lead at the main break.
After only kicking one goal in the first half, Golden Square rallied under pressure and stormed home in the second half to pip the Dragons by five points, 9.6 (60) to 8.7 (55).
Square’s Riley Bouwmeester, Chris Cox and Jack Hickman (pictured) celebrated their 100th games for the Dogs.
Sandhurst slipped to third spot after White Hills retained its unbeaten status with a five-goal win over Eaglehawk.
South Bendigo held off the fast-finishing Strathfieldsaye to win by three points. The Bloods looked home when they kicked five goals to none in the third term to lead by 30 points. The winless Storm did their best to pinch the game, but just fell short.
In the other under-14 senior game, a four-goal to none third quarter set up Kyneton’s 16-point win over Kangaro o Flat.
The top three teams in the under-16 senior division enjoyed strong wins. Sandhurst Marist Dockers couldn’t have been more impressive in defeating South Bendigo by 80 points at the QEO.
The Dockers had 15 individual goal kickers in their 18.13 (121) to 6.5 (41) victory.
Strathfieldsaye scored its best win of the season against Golden Square. The Storm made the most of their opportunities to win 13.6 (84) to 6.8 (44).
Kangaroo Flat had too much firepower for the Kyneton Tigers. The Roos won 18.15 (123) to 4.8 (32).
Kyneton made a statement in the under-12A division. The Tigers are the only undefeated team after disposing of St Therese’s by 31 points. The young Tigers played some great footy in winning, 7.8 (50) to 3.1 (19).
Golden Square proved too strong for Strathfieldsaye. The Bulldogs had the game in hand by half-time and went on to win 7.9 (51) to 3.4 (22).
A three-goal to none first term proved to be decisive in Eaglehawk’s 19-point win over Castlemaine.
The youth girls action was packed with one-sided results. The closest game was between Kyneton and Eaglehawk where the Tigers won by 53 points.
Tarsha Graham kicked nine goals as the Storm defeated Golden Square by 179 points. Kangaroo Flat defeated South Bendigo by 146 points and Woorinen outclassed North Bendigo by 145 points.
