A woman has been held up with an imitation gun in an attempted carjacking in Castlemaine on Monday morning.
The Castlemaine woman, in her 50s, was going to the gym in Railway Avenue at about 6am when a man approached her with a gun, Acting Sergeant Rod Webster said.
“The victim pulled up in her car and was approached by a male,” Acting Sergeant Webster said.
“He pointed a gun at her and the offender told her to hand over car keys.
“The victim did not.
“The offender then pulled trigger and the gun went click – but didn’t go off.
“It is believed it was an imitation firearm.
“The attacker then fled the scene, heading in westerly direction in a car – possibly a Holden Commodore no description other than that.”
The man is described as being in his early 20s, about 5 foot 6 inches with a stocky build and brown, wavy hair.
Central Goldfields Crime Investigation Unit detective senior constable Mathew Hayes said a second man was involved, also believed to be in his early 20s.
He remained in the vehicle and was wearing a dark-coloured hooded jumper.
Detective Senior Constable Hayes said the second man slid from the passenger’s side into the driver’s seat of the light coloured sedan while the man with the gun was speaking to the victim.
“A similar vehicle was seen around Hargraves Street, Castlemaine, about five to six in the morning,” he said.
The vehicle was last seen heading towards Chewton on the Pyrenees Highway.
Detective Senior Constable Hayes appealed for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
