Hearps was announced as the new CEO on Wednesday and will take over from the departing Jason Paech, who recently resigned to return to South Australia to be closer to family and pursue business interests.

As well as having extensive experience within the Victorian racing industry, including working with Country Racing Victoria as a regional services manager and in marketing and events with the Victorian Racing Club, Hearps has family history with the BJC.

He is a direct descendant of Sir John Lienhop – a previous chairman of the BJC and Northern Districts Racing Association – while the Hearps surname has been synonymous with Bendigo racing for three generations.

“I’m extremely excited and honoured to take over the running of the club from Jason, who has left a great platform from which we can continue to build on,” Hearps said.

“I look forward to working with the club committee, sponsors and members to further enhance the outstanding brand and reputation the BJC has enjoyed throughout its long history.”

BJC chair Margot Falconer said the club was delighted with the appointment.

“In Aaron we have a young man who has not only an understanding of the Bendigo Jockey Club from his lifelong involvement in the club, but also given his recent roles he brings with him a broad understanding of the Victorian racing industry,” Falconer said.

“It is this experience and knowledge that will not only help to maintain stability for the club, but add value to the fantastic committee we now have to drive the club forward.”
