The Calder Freeway at Keilor Park remains closed after a petrol tanker rollover there this morning.
Vic Road and Victoria Police are advising people to take alternate routes home.
UPDATE 9.40am: A spokeswoman for the Royal Melbourne Hospital said the condition of the passenger, a 57-year-old Mildura man, had been downgraded to serious but stable.
UPDATE 9.30am: The Calder Freeway in Keilor Park is also closed after a separate collision this morning. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. More details here.
UPDATE 8.45am: Police remain on scene investigating the cause of the crash and detours remain in place.
Sergeant Steve Hill of the Major Collisions Unit said the car had lost control and hit a tree.
"It's then speared across the road and into an Armco railing in the middle of the median strip," he said.
The driver of the vehicle, a 57-year-old man from Red Cliffs, was taken to Bendigo Health in a stable condition.
The 57-year-old passenger was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.
EARLIER: A man in his 50s was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition following a crash on the Calder Highway at Ravenswood late on Monday night.
Another man in his 50s was taken to Bendigo Health in a stable condition.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said the car the men where travelling in hit a tree at about 11.50pm.
The southbound lanes of the highway remain closed to traffic.
