For the first five weeks of the BFNL season, Sandhurst had nothing but bad news when it came to injuries.
When BFNL inter-league centreman Kristan Height limped off Western Park in Warragul on Saturday it appeared the Dragons’ curse had struck again.
Not this time. Height has a minor adductor injury and looks set to miss just the one game – this Saturday’s trip to Kyneton.
“I spoke to Kristan this morning and he’s confident it’s just a one-week injury,’’ Sandhurst coach Wayne Primmer said on Monday.
“We won’t let him come back too early and put more strain on it. If he needs more than one week, so be it. The good news is it’s not as serious as first thought.”
Even better news for the Dragons is skipper Blair Holmes will play his first game for more than a month this week after recovering from a calf injury.
Forward Pascal Craig is also fit to take on the Tigers, while speedy wingman Harry O’Meara and recruit Hamish Leahy could play their first games for the season this Saturday as well – albeit most likely in the reserves.
Ruckman Tim Martin is progressing well in his recovery from a knee injury, while key midfielder Lee Coghlan’s shoulder injury is not as serious as first thought and he is some chance to play against the Tigers.
Despite having an injury list as long as the Flemington home straight, the Dragons have won four games in a row to be in second place on the ladder.
The return of key players couldn’t come at a better time, with their next four games against tougher opposition – Kyneton, Eaglehawk, Golden Square and Kangaroo Flat.
“We’re just taking it one week at a time and we’ll see who is available,’’ Primmer said.
“So far, everything is going okay for us.”
BFNL round six – Saturday: Kyneton v Sandhurst, Eaglehawk v Golden Square, Strathfieldsaye v Gisborne, Maryborough v South Bendigo. Sunday: Castlemaine v Kangaroo Flat.
