The state government will host a large-scale shredding event in Bendigo next weekend to help residents safely dispose of all sensitive documents.
As part of ShredFest 2016, a shredding truck will be parked on Sidney Myer Place from midday to 2pm on Saturday, May 28.
Residents are encouraged to bring old bank statements, credit care applications, utility bills, insurance and health records to shred away in a safe way.
The ACCC found Australians lost $1.8 million to identity theft in 2015, and more than $240,000 reported so far this year.
Consumer Affairs Victoria recommends people get electronic bills and statements to add extra security.
The event is inspired by a similar initiative from New York City.
